Where It Actually Starts.
Clients rarely ask for what they actually need on the first call.
Not because they're being evasive or don't know their own business, but because the real problem is often harder to articulate than the stated one. Getting to the real brief means asking questions, listening properly, and not being afraid to be told you've misunderstood. That last part matters more than most people admit. Misunderstanding is just the beginning of understanding, if you're willing to stay in it.
What I've learned over the years is that every client communicates differently and part of the job is figuring out how. Some arrive with drawings. Some need to talk through their motivation before anything practical can happen. Some are better at saying what they don't like than what they do, and that's just as useful once you know to listen for it. A workshop is often where that pattern becomes clear — not just a place to map out strategy, but a space to learn how someone thinks, what they respond to, what opens them up and what closes them down. That's information you can't get from a brief document. You have to be in the room. And once you're in that room, something else tends to happen. The conversation shifts. What started as a logo brief becomes a conversation about positioning. A website project opens up into a full audit of where the marketing isn't working and why. The original ask stays on the table, but suddenly there's a much bigger question sitting next to it — about direction, about audience, about what the business actually needs to grow. Those conversations are some of the most useful I have. Not because they make the project bigger, but because they make it right.
The best projects I've worked on have always started with a conversation that went somewhere unexpected. Not off the rails, just deeper than the surface brief suggested it would. A question that landed differently than I expected, a silence that said more than the answer would have, a moment where the client said something that reframed everything we'd discussed before it. That's the work underneath the work. Learning to hear it, to sit with the uncertainty before reaching for solutions, to trust that the right brief is always there if you ask the right questions and listen carefully enough to what comes back.
